Isla Vista Church began in 2002 with the mission to bring the gospel of Jesus to the city of Isla Vista and to see it transformed from an infamous party city into a city filled with the light and love of Jesus. Over the years we have seen countless lives touched, changed, and sent from Isla Vista to bring the kingdom of God to other cities, churches, and into the nations. Below are several of our Core Family Values.

Everything begins with knowing who He is, then we discover who we are. Becoming healthy and mature has everything to do with knowing who you are in Christ. Without a secure identity in Jesus, we live for love instead of from love – always looking to find our worth, value, and significance from external things instead of from God.

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

God is a Father and this makes us sons and daughters along with brothers and sisters in Christ. Our covenant relationship with God brings us into the body of Christ and unites us to the family of God. Church was never called to be a place you go to, but rather a family you belong to. The bible has over 50 “one another” verses that can never be lived out in insolation, but requires us to be part of the covenant community called the Church.

“God places the lonely in families; He sets the prisoners free and gives them joy.” (Psalm 68:6)

A life of intimate union with God – conversational intimacy, contemplative prayer, and intercession. Prayer is a many faceted gift given to us by God; an invitation into a relationship of knowing God, hearing God, and learning the language of God. In addition, we have the privilege of partnering with God to pray for those around us and believe that He hears our voice and responds to our prayers.

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;” (John 10:27)

Living a life of “go,” and as we go, we partner with God to bring the culture of heaven to earth. We are a sending movement both within our community as well as launching people out of Isla Vista into their next chapter of life. Like Jesus, we want to raise people up to live a life of “doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the evil one.” (Acts 10:38)

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,” (Matthew 28:19)

Fire falls on sacrifice, and the sacrificial love of Jesus is our fuel for all we do. The fullness of joy is found in losing our lives to find them. Our culture has discipled us in independence, but God has invited us into a life of dependence. May our life of sacrifice be an expression of our love for God and others.

“Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.” (Romans 12:1)
